You tried and tried again to work on your marriage, but it is clear that you and your spouse are not meant to be. Now you find yourself staring down the ominous road of divorce with your children along for the ride. To make this situation a bit easier for everyone, the divorce attorneys at Brandon Legal Group have compiled a list of tips for couples divorcing with children. For the first two tips, read Part I of Divorcing with Children.

Tips for Parents going through a Divorce

3. Social media is your enemy.

We all know that social media is a great place to vent. You can let the world know when great things are happening or when not so great things are happening. Social media can even serve as a support system; however, badmouthing your spouse online to your 100 closest friends will get you nowhere. Depending on the age of your children, they could read your negative comments. Remember that your children share their DNA with your soon-to-be ex. When you criticize characteristics about your ex, you are possibly criticizing your own children. Your seemingly harmless Facebook rant could also be used against you in court.

4. Hire an attorney.

Even if you and your spouse agree on everything, I guarantee that you have not thought of everything. If you do not know what right of first refusal means or the significance of the phrase “substantial chance in circumstance,” you need an attorney. You can save thousands of dollars by having an experienced family law attorney draft your marital settlement agreement and parenting plan the first time around.

5. Be a parenting team.

There are so many instances where children have learned to manipulate the conflict between their parents to their advantage. If mom says no, then ask dad. If you are in trouble at dad’s house, call mom and she will come pick you up. If there is no communication between the parents then just like that the child is able to get away with bad behavior. Remember, you are raising children, not just trying to win a court case. Open communication between parents will result in children that are raised to be respective, productive adults.
