Updating your will after divorce:

Revoke your old estate planning documents and get a new one

First and foremost you should tear up your old will or living trust to revoke them. Then get newly updated documents. If you never had a will, it may be in your best interest to create one now.

If you don’t update your will, trust, and beneficiary designations, your ex could inherit.

While going through the perils of divorce, your estate plan is probably not something you are thinking about; however, updating your will is important. If you neglect to do so, your assets could be dispersed in ways you do not want, and your ex-spouse could wind up with a lot. During this troubling time, you need a divorce attorney you can trust.
