Children and Divorce – Custody Considerations

Children are precious to our lives and integral to our society. As such, we must protect them from unnecessary hurt and disruption in their lives. When parents seek to dissolve their marriage (also known as divorce), the children’s care and their well-being should be a top importance. While in a divorce, you are ending your legal relationship with your spouse, this should have no effect on your children’s relationship. In other words, even after a divorce, you will always remain your children’s parents.

Arguably, divorce is one of the most stressful personal crises for both adults and children.

The stress caused by a divorce can manifest physically, behaviorally, and emotionally. Children of all ages react and deal with divorce differently. It is not uncommon for them to experience, at a minimum, irritability or even worse, drug use in the teenage years.  However, understanding these possible changes can help you intervene early on to prevent serious problems in the future.

If you cannot resolve these issues on your own, the court will decide for you.
